First thoughts of A raisin In the Sun

"A Raisin In the Sun" is a play that portrays the main themes of money and race.  I thought the play was difficult to understand because of the different adversity and the different cultures throughout the play contradicting with each other. I had a hard time following some of the scenes and what was happening.  I think this play was almost trying to explain what the American Dream consists of and what it takes to get there.  The play was about the families living situation before they received a check and what they did with the money when they did receive the check. Everyone in the family had different visions of what to do with the check that caused tension throughout the family.  Race came into the play when they moved to an all white neighborhood and back then African Americans were not treated equal.  Overall, I think the play was good and portrayed some good life lessons about money and how race can affect living conditions.  

Life in the hood-Straight Outta Compton

Straight Outta Compton is a film that takes place in southern Los Angeles also known as the “hood”.  This film shows what it’s like for African Americans to pursue a dream while dealing with racial segregation, gang violence and rejection.  Straight Outta Compton shows a lot of violence and racial segregation, it tells the appealing story on how South Los Angeles group N.W.A revolutionized pop culture and explains what living in the hood is really like. I really enjoyed this film for multiple reasons.  The film dug deep into the topics of racial segregation, money, pop-culture and living with violence.  The film made me realize how African Americans have many obstacles in pursuing a career due to racial segregation from authorities and society. I think this film could be a good lesson to people as well to overcome the bad in life and make it into something positive or the result will not be good. Violence was a big part of the movie and was used as a way to get what you want.  The rap group N.W.A pushed their limits as a way to make a point that they are not getting treated fairly by police authorities and performed the song “F*** the police”.  The result from the performance ended up being a riot.  Although this song promoted violence towards police, because of their race they were punished.  Multiple times throughout the movie African Americans were randomly beat up by police authorities. The way these people were raised reflected their behavior.  The lyrics the group N.W.A comes up with reflect their life and experiences.  It made me realize how hard it is for some people to distinguish the good and bad in life from how they are raised.  Drugs were also a big factor in the movie. I think that alcohol and drugs promoted some of the behavior towards one another in the movie.

Selma Reaction

In the movie Selma, a very detailed and accurate resemblance was shown related to the civil rights movement. The main focus of the movie is trying to get equal rights for African American people the same as everyone else.  Voting is a main concern that the African Americans are fighting for.  Without their vote there will never be a leader that is for giving them equal rights.  Throughout the movie they showed how poorly and unethical the African Americans are treated. It is astonishing how the color of your skin can determine if you are equal to whites or not.  I believe that all people are created equal no matter what race you are. Martin Luther King exceeds great limits to fight for what is right and for the people who are not being treated equal. This movie really opened my eyes and made me realize how people will follow society and not speak up for others that often.  Throughout the movie there is a lot of murdering and violence towards African Americans when they did absolutely nothing wrong. The society thought it was normal to treat African Americans poorly and promoted to act in violence towards them.   This movie made me realize how the world has changed today.  Fortunately, everyone is treated equally today than in the past.  I think it is very unethical and sad that African American people were treated as if they were not humans.  The scene that caught my eye was the march to Montgomery.  The African Americans politely asked to have a word with a gentlemen and they immediately attacked them by brutally beating them to the ground and some resulting in death. Martin Luther King did not give up and was determined to make a difference and he succeeded when the bill was finally passed.  I really enjoyed this movie and it made me think twice about when people disrespect a different race.  We are all created equal and are very blessed that today different races are not treated how they were back then. I did not know much about the civil rights movement until watching this move. Throughout high school we were educated about the general idea of how they were treated, not specific details like shown in this movie. I did not know that there were so many details and steps MLK had to go through just to get his people to be treated fairly. I enjoyed this movie because of the educational aspect and the emotional factor that contributed to it.

The Search For Stevie

At 12:35 we were startled to find that Stevie had been kidnapped from 316 of the Library. Our teacher gave us the task of searching for Stevie.  First, we need a reference to see what he looks like. We were given a set of clues that would help us to search for the encyclopedia of the dog. We were reluctant to find the encyclopedia after a long search of every inch of the first floor.

After getting an idea of what Stevie looked like, as we were walking we were startled by a shark hanging from the ceiling with a clue attached to its fin. The letter attached to the sharks fin let us to another clue to finding Stevie.

We right away thought to look in the newspaper named after Stevie, hoping it would lead us to the next clue. After questioning the Librarian we received information that he was last seen browsing the CD's. We decided to search the CD collection and found the fourth clue.

A student studying on the fourth floor tipped us off that Stevie and the kidnapper were in the PN book section, we decided to check it out. To our disappointment we only found the kidnapper, but we found the fifth clue.

Walking out of the stair well we were greeted by a team of Stevens Point police officers. They informed us about a hostage situation that was happening on the fifth floor and that we are essential when it comes to preventing the hostage from sustaining any injuries. We took the elevator up to the 5th floor with the officers where we found sally the salty sea lion and his army of beavers, otters, and fat eagles. We weren't sure what was going on at first but an officer filled us in. Come to find out it turns out that sally was salty for a reason. Back in 1976 Stevens Point had a legendary aquatic attraction and sally was the star, she was lined up to be the new university mascot until Stevie completed the triple backflip stick catch and retained his place. Sally has been salty ever since so he banded together with his fellow aquatic Marsupals to stop Stevie. When we reached Stevie he was quickly taken by the fat eagles and whisked away to another location. After questioning sally with tactics deemed too graphic for this story, we received information on the location of the final clue. The seventh and final clue was located on the sixth floor. The elevators were sabotaged by the eagles so we had to take the stairs. Reaching the sixth floor we decided to take the secret door to sustain the element of surprise. We tore through the door only to find an empty room with the last clues crumpled on the floor. We studied the letters trying to find the final location of Stevie. At last, the magnificent young man Evan Wisniewski figured it out, Archives. We rushed to the archives and at last found our beloved Stevie.

Study Abroad Fair- DUC- 10/4/2016

I recently attended the Study Abroad fair.  Going into the fair I have always had an interest in studying abroad but never knew that much information on it.  This event informs students about the many opportunities in different countries whether it’s in the summer or during the school year to study abroad for a semester or more.  At the fair they had many different booths explaining the trips and had people there who had been on the trip to inform you about it. Studying abroad in a different country can benefit you in many ways.  One way is the experience, how different people in the world live.  It is good to see first-hand how different cultures, religions and beliefs take place.  Another good think about these programs is seeing the geography of these countries. The world has so many different features and landmarks that we don’t even know about!  Most of the programs focus on certain majors and therefore credits only count for certain majors as well.  The trips are not only for people whose majors correspond with it.  The trips are open to anybody.  One set back to someone to not going may be the cost of going on these trips.  Financial aid and scholarships are available to anyone who applies and could potentially help tremendously.  Studying abroad also looks good on a resume when applying for jobs.  On these trips you will have experienced so many different things and learn many things that can be useful in everyday life.  It also peaked my interest in attending more fairs or similar events to this one.  After going to this fair I increased my interest and knowledge on the many different experiences that can benefit you from studying abroad in a different country.  I will most defiantly be looking into going to Australia for Health Promotion.
